About Dr. Donna Smith Bellinger

About Dr. Donna Smith Bellinger | Sales Consultant & Keynote Speaker | Chicago, IL

Work is what you do to finance who you want to become.

Dr. Donna doesn't do motivational fluff. She doesn't hide real-world challenges behind gimmicks or jargon. What she brings to every engagement is 30+ years of hard-won experience — as a single mother who matched her father's income within three years, as the only woman and only person of color in rooms that didn't roll out the welcome mat, and as a business owner who built something real from nothing.

That experience is what makes her methodology work. It's not theory. It's applied knowledge from someone who has lived the reinvention she teaches.

"Work is what you do to finance who you want to become — and who you choose to serve."

People know, like, and trust you. Now let's make that pay.

Most of Dr. Donna's clients come to her already great at what they do. The problem isn't their expertise — it's that their sales process hasn't kept pace with their ability. She helps them close that gap.

Her work focuses on three things: clarity about who you serve and what you solve, a repeatable process your team can actually execute, and the confidence to ask for — and get — what your work is worth.

One mantra she gives every client: I am the expert. Because until you own that, no sales system in the world will work the way it should.

When everything changed.

Dr. Donna's story isn't a straight line. It's a series of pivots, reinventions, and moments of clarity that shaped both who she is and how she works with clients. Here are a few of the moments that matter.

Age 18
The first reinvention

Asked to leave her family home one week after the birth of her son, with the parting words: "No good man will ever want you, and you'll be working the streets in six months." Within three years, she had matched her father's income — because she discovered that sales was her natural language.

The room
The youngest. The only woman. The only person of color.

Named admissions director and assistant school director for a vocational school chain, she walked into her first quarterly meeting in Kansas and was greeted with: "You sure must be good at what you do, because they didn't hire you for your looks." Her all-male team responded by beating every competitor's numbers, month after month. When she was demoted after rebuilding the school and getting it re-certified, her team stood up and said they quit. She told them to sit down — their wives knew where she lived.

The Bahamas
The moment she stopped playing roles

On a company trip to the Bahamas, her best friend watched her dance — really dance — for the first time. The feedback: "I've seen Donna, Smitty's daughter. I've seen Donna, the mother. I've seen Donna, the boss. I have never seen you do you." She came home a different woman — and within a month, resigned from a manager who told her she should "let a man have this job." His company was out of business within a year.

The pivot
The question that changed everything

After closing a large City of Chicago tech contract — and being told by the client "we've never done business with a minority firm before" — a partner stopped her on the way out and asked: "Donna, if you could do absolutely anything and money was not an issue, what would you do?" The answer came before she could think: "All I want to do for the rest of my life is travel and train." That was the moment DSB Consulting was born.

The receipts.
